New and improved crash test dummy, St. Louis
We have all seen the crash dummies that car manufacturers use. These are important because engineers can see what happens to a person in an accident. While this worked well to get a basic understanding of how the airbags will deploy and what parts of the body will be affected, this was not full proof. The Toyota Pre-Collision System now comes standard on most new Toyota models as part of the Toyota Safety Sense active safety bundle. But, just how does the system work? Front facing exterior cameras continuously scan the road ahead for potential hazards. When a hazard is detected, the system will respond in one of three ways: with audio and visual alerts, with Brake Assist, or with Automatic Emergency Braking depending on the severity of the threat. Toyota models equipped with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system can automatically maintain a set following distance between themselves and the vehicles traveling in front of them. Each model comes with a standard following distance already set, but drivers have the option to shorten or lengthen the distance to their preferences using the meter controls on their steering wheel and multi-information display. June is National Safety Month and that makes it the perfect time to refresh our brains on some important safety information like correct car seat installation. Over 75% of kids are riding in car seats that are not the correct fit or are not installed correctly which can limit their effectiveness during a collision. To help increase awareness and information on correct car seat installation, Toyota has partnered with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to create the Buckle Up For Life program to provide national education on safe car travel for kids.
